Finding that Perfect Graduate Role

24 June 2019

So you’ve just finished university and you’re fully milking those celebrations… grad ball, ‘drinks’, and good-bye brunches. But secretly you’re wondering what your future holds, as it’s time to say goodbye to the university life-style, and get a job in the real world.

Sounds scary, I know, but these tips will give you the guidance necessary to begin your journey to finding the perfect career:

1. Don’t stress

I know that hunting for a graduate role can be stressful. I have spent numerous hours surrounded by recent graduates frantically applying for every job they come across online. But studies have revealed that thousands of new graduates are out of work so fear not. The right opportunity will come across at some point. So in the mean time, think about your options at the moment and make the most of your time that you have. See the world, visit your favourite places and spend time with the people you care about the most.

2. Social Media

Check your social media accounts and have a think of how a potential employer will perceive them. Get rid of all those photos from your 4 day benders, and delete those embarrassing high school ‘like for like’ statuses. Make sure that your online profiles are presentable, and present you as the professional, hardworking graduate that I’m sure you are. Alternatively, make all of your online profiles private so that only accepted friends and followers can view them. This will prevent your potential employer coming across any embarrassing, and deal-breaking content.

In you don’t have LinkedIn, perhaps give that a go. Our ‘Graduates Guide to LinkedIn’ should help you make your profile top notch and attractive to recruiters. Building your LinkedIn network will also make you known to employers and will enable you to find potential opportunities to suit your skills and experience. Use your connections on LinkedIn, as they say, ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’, so utilise this platform and its people as much as you can.

3. Speak to Recruiters

There are sooo many recruitment agencies about so use them! Many specialise in graduate recruitment so you really will be in safe hands. 4. Improve you CV

Get some more experience. Voluntary work, internships and work experience placements are all perfect ways to gain relevant experience for your dream job. Low-paid jobs are perhaps not as glamorous as you were expecting the graduate life to be, but these jobs are the perfect stepping stone into career opportunities. Hobbies are another way to set yourself apart from other graduates, so use your free time to master a new skill and broaden your skills and experiences. Upload your CV onto a job site (and LinkedIn!) to enable employers and recruiters to access your skills and assess your suitability for new roles.

Work on your cover letter. This is the perfect way to sell yourself and your suitability for a specific role. Tailor your CV and cover letter to the job you are applying for and explain why YOU are perfect for the role. Research the role and company in advance to make sure you’re right on the mark with this.

5. Make Yourself Employable

Nowadays there are more people than ever graduating with First Class degrees, so make sure you stand out from the crowd by finding ways to make yourself even more employable. Volunteering, or starting your own blog shows initiative and proves to your future employer that you are a self-starter, and most definitely employable.

The graduate market is competitive, but that doesn’t mean that your dream job is out of reach. Stay determined and motivated in securing your dream role, and if at first you don’t succeed, try again.
