New Chapter recruits Research & Development Director for Kerry Ingredients in the Netherlands

08 August 2012

The Challenge

After working with Kerry Ingredients on a number of successful UK-based senior appointments, we were approached by the Dutch division of Kerry Ingredients; a division of a large multi-national food group who were looking to appoint an R&D Director.

After seeing significant expansion in their US based cereal businesses they were looking to replicate this growth by recruiting a senior R&D specialist with a track record of technical innovation on a European basis. This was a newly created role and required the individual to possess very specific skills in terms of technical competence within cereals, extrusion technology and sugar formulation. This, coupled with an intimate knowledge of consumer trends on a country by country basis and exposure to all aspects of product development, made this a particularly challenging assignment.

The New Chapter Solution

After an initial meeting in Amsterdam with two of the Kerry Ingredient’s Directors, we were briefed on the role and asked to submit a proposal in terms of our understanding of their requirements and our suggested approach.

The main elements to be considered were the very specific background and skills required, the location in the Netherlands and the fact they would need to be an English speaker. It was clear that utilising search methodologies would be integral to the success of the campaign. Subsequently a target list of competitor organisations covering the UK & Europe was compiled. A targeted online advertisement using an industry specific site with international coverage ran in parallel with the search to maximise response.

The search and advert response revealed in excess of 60 candidates who were either a possible match or may be able to recommend someone. After the initial sifting process, all potential candidates were assessed by competency based interviews and specific questions provided by the client were used to uncover their understanding of technically complex situations.

The Results

A final shortlist was drawn up with candidates located in the USA, France, Netherlands, Italy and India. After a two stage interview with the client, an offer was made with the successful candidate who swiftly accepted the role and relocated from New Delhi.
